It had been almost two months since the scene with Trish in my kitchen, and there hadn’t been a word between us. I was driving into work when I saw her call come through. My heart fell into my gut, but I didn’t pause; I picked up.

“Hey.” I was guarded, acutely aware she could cut me again; but I didn’t care. My life wasn’t right without her.

“Vic,” I heard my name in her sweet voice and I knew we were going to be OK.

“Vic, I miss you. I miss you so much.”

“I miss you, too.” That was my simple truth. That was what mattered.

“I’m sorry I hurt you. I love you, Vic,” she said.

“I love you, too. Where are you? What are you doing tonight?”

We never spoke again about what had happened that day. The nightmare of accusation and loss fell behind us, and I swept the details to dust. I didn’t know if she’d changed her mind about her diagnosis, or if it just no longer mattered. I didn’t care. It was surprisingly unimportant. I just decided to trust her and forgive her. I would not forget, but I could forgive her: in a heartbeat. I loved her, and she loved me. That was forever.
